Families Applaud Congressional Passage of FY08 State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriation Bill

Language prohibits U.S. foreign assistance to Libya until justice is fulfilled to American victims

Statement of Kara Weipz, President of Victims of Pan Am Flight 103:

"Today, the Victims of Pan Am Flight 103 applaud Congress for adopting the FY08 State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations bill." The bill prohibits spending on U.S. foreign assistance to Libya until Libya honors commitments it made to the victims of Pan Am 103. It also requires the State Department to report to Congress every six months its efforts to bring justice to the victims.

"We thank the leadership of Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) for sending this strong message to Libya that the United States has not forgotten the 270 people killed in the Lockerbie bombing. For almost two decades, Senator Lautenberg has led Congressional support for justice to American victims of terrorism. We strongly urge President Bush to stand in support for this language and we hope to see the bill signed into law."

Friday, December 21, 2007 will mark the 19th memorial of the Lockerbie bombing victims. "As the families gather at Arlington National Cemetery for the annual memorial of loved ones lost in the bombing, we are heartened by this important step by Congress. We deeply appreciate Congressional efforts to hold Libya accountable before it is rewarded with U.S. financial support."
