Suse Lowenstein

Received the Keeping the Spirit Alive Award on October 24, 2008

Suse Lowenstein, an established artist and mother of Alexander Lowenstein, created 76 sculptures of mothers, sisters, grandmothers and widows known at Dark Elegy. She captured the moment at which each person learned of the death of her loved one. In time, the truth of Dark Elegy brought 9.11.2001 families in search of Dark Elegy. It has become a tradition on 9.11 that the public gathers among the sculptures and hears a cellist play in memory of all victims of terrorism. Dark Elegy has become the second most popular attraction in Montauk, NY.
